III. STRUCTURE A. Introduction The headings (or superscripts) in Proverbs readily divide the book into seven collections (1:1; 10:1; 22:17; 24:23; 25:1; 30:1; 31:1). Though 22:17 lacks a distinct editorial heading, its reference to “the sayings of the wise,” its distinctive form, and its integrity with 22:17–21, referring among other things to the “thirty sayings” in 22:20 (emended), clearly set these verses apart as the first of the thirty sayings.
